The Characteristics of the Dogue de Bordeaux
Among the main reasons pepole love the breed is the fact that the Dogue de Bordeaux is an extremely protective pet. This has been associated with their wide build and their historic role as both a watchdog and hunting dog for their owners. The Dogue de Bordeaux also shows an unmatched devotion to their family, meaning they can become incredibly brave in the presence of threat. With these characteristics in mind, the breed is the ideal addition for a family unit in need of a loyal and vigilant dog.
Another common characteristic of the Dogue de Bordeaux is the breed’s unrivalled love and affection, something which their owners know all too well. Contrary to the way that their sizable and intimidating build portrays them, the breed revels in the company and affections of its owner, making them one of the most charismatic breeds out there. In particular, owners of the breed record them being exceptionally gentle and sweet towards children, despite their size.
Although it must be said that the Dogue de Bordeaux’s friendly nature does not extend to other dogs, since they instead become unfriendly, territorial and stubborn in their presence. It is frequently found that the breed exhibits hostile behaviour around canine playmates, which can easily progress to aggression in an uncontrolled environment. To eradicate this behaviour early on, experts recommend early socialisation with other pets and animals to ensure the breed is comfortable around other canines.
It is also a common Dogue de Bordeaux trait to present themselves as relaxed and lazy, especially compared to other, more energetic breeds. The Dogue de Bordeaux struggles to endure long and intense periods of exercise as the breed is best suited to shorter, half an hour long walks instead. Whilst this appears to make them somewhat easier to own than more energetic and demanding dogs, the size and weight of Dogues means this is not the case, as they are particularly difficult to manage and train when they are young!
Yet the most appealing game aspect of the breed is the striking appearance and aesthetic of the Dogue de Bordeaux. Not only is the Dogue set to weigh around 100 pounds, but it also has a remarkably wide shoulder width of 27 inches, making it an impressive and magnificent dog. That is not all, either, since the Dogue boasts a gorgeous short hair mahogany coat too.
